The Secret Scott Review:

One of the most anticipated launches of a surfboard in recent times, the Channel Islands mid retro lines and minimal resin tint  look like a sleek throw back in time to surfing’s golden age , where boards were chopped shorter and hair was grown longer. But its more than that ……much more. Back in the 70’s boards got shorter in the search for ever more manoeuvrability on the waves face. Style and its associated dance in surfing was born. Surf stars such as Michael Peterson stood out with flawless style and grace on virtually any wave that stood in front of him . Fast forward to the modern day and its now Devon Howards time to grace the same rolling waves that were always there all along. The CI mid is a nod back to those times where clean lines, speed drives and pure flow were the measure of a surfer across the globe.

As one of the most famous surfboard builders out there Channel Islands long history and design research cumulates in putting together what we believe is about as pure a surf craft one could have. The Ci Mid is all about effortless wave catching and flow. The entry level nose rocker is low giving great forward momentum when catching waves and has a reasonable gradual rocker coming out of the tail to help navigate and more critical lines in more powerful surf conditions. A double barrel concave runs through the board giving extra lift and speed compared to many conventional mid’s where a vee or rolled bottom are the standard. The rail line in my opinion is medium to low and really runs into a sharp tucked in edge at the rear of the board for ultimate hold and control during committed rail turns.

The recommended fin set up is a collaboration between Devon Howard and Chuck Ames ( True Ames Fin Co ) and features a 6.5 centre single fin which is designed specifically designed for this board along with two trailer side bite fins in two sizes according to the riders weight . Single on the small days then add the side bites when it gets overhead would be my plan but everyone has their own preference when it comes to this so explore the possibilities to suit what feels the best for you. The board only comes in a minimal resin tint with subtle subdued logos……Less is more as they say !

This board would be suited to someone of any age who loves the pure slide and glide side of surfing where speed, flow and smooth transitions are paramount over anything else. The new bottom contours will efficiently drive through flatter smaller surf, but the pulled in tail will ensure this board starts performing pretty dam good when the surf gets well overhead . Take off with ease, smile , flow and connect and remember style never went out of fashion.

What Channel Islands Say:

Inspired by the clean, longer-railed lines drawn by traditional eggs and single-fins, the CI Mid infuses that vibe with the crispness, sensitivity, and freedom made possible by modern features synonymous with Merrick design principles. Boasting a moderate midlength template with low entry rocker and foam forward for ease of paddle and effortless trim speed, the CI Mid scoots, squirts and swivels thanks to contemporary features like double-barrel concave, graduated rocker, and hard, slightly tucked rails through and off the tail.

A reliable all-arounder that flies over the flatter, smaller stuff, the CI Mid really stands apart from other midlength designs in shoulder-high to nearly double overhead point surf, where surfers are able to lay down flowy, arcing turns with total confidence, speed, and control.
The minimalist logo is out of the Channel Islands Archives—a lam Al put on his boards in the early ’70s—all CI Mids are stocked with high quality, colorful resin craftsmanship (6-4oz. decks with 6oz. bottoms).
As we know, fins can make or break any surfboard. For the CI Mid, we worked closely with SoCal surfer Devon Howard and our friends at True Ames Fins to custom build this 2 + 1 set that enhances our new midlength’s high-performance characteristics, as well as proving to be versatile in a wide range of conditions with just a simple adjustment of the center fin.
Thanks to decades’ worth of knowledge, as well as countless rounds of R&D, Devon and True Ames founder Chuck Ames landed on this beautiful, tidy, well-balanced outline with full base and moderate rake that was hand foiled for medium flex—making for a very responsive ride with just the right amount of hold and lift that helps you accelerate through turns. Shaped from clear fiberglass panels, the CI Mid’s 6.5” center box fin is complemented by 2 x FCS side bites
