| The
three main surfing breaks in and around Scarborough are:
-
North Bay
- South
Bay
- Cayton
Bay
All
three are predominantly beach breaks with the odd scar and cluster of
rocks creating waves.
North and South Bay are separated by the castle headland and are Scarborough's
most surfed beaches. The headland creates an excellent wind break, protecting
South Bay in northerly winds and North Bay on the rarer south east swells.
However you can expect to lose a good few feet in swell size if you go
in search of a cleaner wave.
North Bay
North
Bay is comprised of three main peaks:
| 1.
Mid-high tide | |
 |
offshore |
|
|
 |
Supersucks
can be found at the northern end of the beach, a fickle wave only
really turns on in a clean east or medium sized S/E swell but as
its name implies, fast hollow waves are the go.
| 2.
Mid tide | |
 |
offshore |
|
Middle peak can work through all stages of tide except high (where waves
backwash off the sea wall). Will work on both N, NE and E swells. Out
from the cafe lies a clump of rock reef that in the right swell creates
a heavy shallow right-hander.
| 3.
Low-mid tide | |
 |
offshore |
Rights as its name implies creates a right-hander at the south end of
the bay off the point, although rare to see this can be world class on
its day. However the shifting peaks in front of the main defences are
surfed far more frequently as good lefts and rights can be found in NW,
N, NE + E swells.
 |
South Bay
A flat sand beach break with shifting peaks:
| Low-mid
tide | |
 |
offshore |
|
In big northerlies, swell wraps around the headland harbour creating a
cleaner wave - expect to lose 2-3ft in wave height though, generally a
weaker wave. Brilliant for beginner/intermmediate surfers, however in
massive northerlies it can sometimes be the only surfable spot! South
Bay is normally best at mid tide though on big tides with the right swell
can work through low tide as well. Alternatively in E or S/E swells from
mid to high tide, sucky left/right peaks can be found in front of the
slipway/amusements.
Cayton Bay
Caton Bay offers 3 surfing breaks.
| 1.
Mid tide | |
 |
offshore |
|
|
 |
Pumphouse. Situated at the North end of Cayton Bay, predominantly
lefts breaking over a mixture of sand and boulders. Best at mid
tide. Occasionally classic at low tide on small tides. |
| 2.
Mid-high | |
 |
offshore |
Middle Peak. Directly in front of the Cayton car park steps. It breaks
over sand and is better from mid to high tide. Popular with beginners
and bodyboarders.
| 3.
Mid-high tide | |
 |
offshore |
Bunkers. A classic beach break setup situated between the World War II
bunkers - A series of A-frame peaks that can turn on in NW, N, NE and
E swells. Better towards high tide - can get fairly localised on those
classic days.
Other peaks nearby however remain fairly quiet.
