Report
Saturday 21st October was the date for the Secret Spot / Rip Curl
Bomb Comp Series in Scarborough. After a lot of tension in the week
building up to the event, due to the changeable chart, we couldn't
have wished for better surf conditions on the day.
With solid 3ft sets rolling in, the stage was set for a great days
surfing. Registration was at 8am and the turnout was fantastic with
plenty of competitors in all categories including Juniors, Novice,
Longboard, Masters and the Open.
The comp finally got underway at 9.00am with heats from two different
categories running alongside each other due to the number of competitors!
The 20 minute heats ran consecutively all day with the surf remaining
consistently solid and clean. The standard of surfing was very high
too, which made the judges jobs that bit harder. Most places in
the heats were decided by just 0.5-1 point which made it a nail
biting race to the final.
The semi-finals were contested in the best conditions of the day,
with perfect shoulder to head high rights pumping through, giving
all the competitors a chance to open their bag of tricks!! The wave
of the day went to James Turner with a screaming right hander that
guaranteed his place in the final.
The finals of all categories were held in slightly bumpy conditions
as the waves started to backwash against the wall at North Bay.
But this just made the contest more fun and close, with Icky and
James neck a neck in the open and Joss and Sandy battling wave for
wave in the juniors.
Funniest wave of the day was probably Scotty almost getting a wall
ride as he rode a wave right into the backwash! The whole of the
final was watched by a packed out North Bay with no gaps in the
railings due to people spectating!
After the close fought finals, prizes were given out at the Rip
Curl tent as the near high tide waves came crashing over the wall
- soaking a few of the contestants too!! The results are:

to a close with a good night out for everyone that was involved,
with drinks at Bar2b then onto Vivaz! for some amping rock tunes
courtesy of Vallen Brosa. Needless to say, the line-up was quite
empty on Sunday morning with most people nursing sore heads!

everyone who helped make the day a success, especially: Rip Curl,
Dangerous Brands, Vivaz, Vallen Brosa, Scarborough Malibu Club,
Jay and all the Judges.
